As you may know, it is difficult get your fondant to be a solid black or red-they often come out as gray or pink. Well, I've discovered an easy and effective way to get a deep, dark black.
You have to make your own fondant to begin with. A single batch calls for 1 cup of marshmallows and 1 TBSP of water. Instead of water, I used liquid black food coloring (not the gel paste) in place of the water (1 TBSP). I then proceeded as normal for the reminder of the recipe. I did add a few globs of gel paste just to make sure it would be black, and man was it black! Black as pitch. And it only took me as long as it took to make white fondant. So easy.
I will try this technique with red someday. For this next cake ( which I will post in a day or so), I used HALF my container of red gel paste and I only got semi-red.

OMG!!! Genius idea! I would have NEVER thought of doing that. I do replace 1/2 tablespoon of water with any flavor extract to flavor the fondant, but never though of coloring it that way! You are right though red and black are near impossible colors to make. How does the color transfer to your hands when you are kneading?

Great idea! yeah, I always hate how my colors turn out, especially black and red. I'm thinking about trying a different brand of coloring, since I hear that brands vary in their intensity.

ReplyDeleteTraci: I use the Wilton gels (they pretty much have a monopoly on cake decorating supplies anyway). Let me know if you find another brand you like better and how they differ from Wilton!
