Just Ducky!

We just celebrated my little guy's birthday yesterday (duck-themed, in case you can't tell). It was a blast! The big cake was tons of fun to make--particularly the little duck. I love the way he turned out. I'm pretty satisfied with how the big cake turned out overall. The top layer is rice crispy treats. I almost regretted making the top layer rice crispy treats because the edges of the rice crispies showed through the fondant--even after putting TWO, yes, TWO layers of fondant over it--but when I added the circles, the edges didn't bother me as much. The bottom layers was devil's food with chocolate frosting and chocolate pudding middle. So yummy! The only regret I have with this cake is not making the cake board the same color as the cake. I think it would have looked cooler if it were. Oh well.

This next cake is my little guy's personal cake. I used the ducky cake pan and sliced off a side and used it to make his cake. I didn't bother too much with making it cute (as you can see the handwriting is atrocious!) because I knew the birthday boy would tear it apart (which he did!)

Baby Cake

A friend of mine just had her baby. I brought her dinner and decided I might as well bring her a cake, since I had just made one the night before for my cake class. It was my first try working with gum paste. I think the pacifier turned out okay, though not quite what I had in mind. I really should have used a tip 3 for the message...but that was the one my disposal ate and I keep forgetting to buy a new one. I think the cake turned out okay. Kind of plain but I didn't have time to do as much as I would have liked with this cake.

St. Patty's Day Cake

Some friends invited us over for a St. Patrick's day dinner. If they didn't I would have completely forgotten about St. Patrick's day! I am part Irish, but since I'm not Catholic nor do I drink, this holiday holds no significance to me.

BUT...I'm very glad they did because not only was it fun and yummy, but it was also another excuse for me to make another cake! I brought this cake to the dinner. It's chocolate with chocolate pudding filling and fudge frosting. YUM!

I think it turned out okay. I didn't have a shamrock cookie cutter so I improvised and used a heart cutter. I think it worked pretty well. You can't see it very well, but I greased up the shamrocks and sprinkled green sugar crystals on them. The sprinkles gave the cake some texture and sparkle. I think I should incorporate sprinkles on my cakes more often!

The Lone Flower

I made this flower with the intention of putting it on the last cake. I wanted to make flowers that resembled these. I just fumbled around with the fondant until I got this flower, which I think looks pretty darn cute, though not quite like the ones in the link. I tried to make a bunch of this flower but I just couldn't recreate it. Not one turned out as nice as the fist. Oh well. Maybe next time I'll figure something out.

Rice Crispy "Cake"

Funny thing...this next cake isn't really cake at all. It's just one big rice crispy treat!

It's a yummy alternative to when you're sick of cake but still want something yummy (Styrofoam is NOT yummy, trust me!).

I'm assuming you know the recipe for rice crispy treats, so I won't type it here. All you do is make a lot of it and stuff it all in a greased cake pan. I thought I made a ton but it barely made enough to fill a 6" X 3" round cake pan.
I had no plan for this cake; I just tried a bunch of things and went with what I thought looked good. I guess it turned out okay. I think it's too monochromatic but I was too lazy to make more fondant.

This "cake" is also frosting-free, so it didn't make much mess. I used the marshmallow fondant recipe for the fondant. I think it's easier to work with than the Wilton store bought fondant.

RIP Tip 3

My poor tip 3. The sink disposal ate it. I was careless and didn't keep track of my tips when I was washing my decorating stuff after making the last cake. Good thing decorating tips are only $1! RIP Tip 3!

Course IV

I just signed up for Wilton course IV (fondant and gum paste) as of yesterday. SO EXCITED! More cute cakes to come!
